Crisis in Sudan: A year of violence and upheaval

A year of conflict has plunged Sudan into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Approximately 8.4 million people – including 2 million children under the age of 5 – have fled their homes.

Famine is imminent

The ongoing hostilities that have ripped the country apart, are now pushing huge swathes of the population dangerously close to famine, with millions of lives at risk.

Across the country, 17.7 million people are facing high levels of acute food insecurity, with 5 million people just one step away from famine.

Food production has declined, transportation routes are disrupted, and as the economy continues to crumble, essential foods and commodities remain out of reach for many.

Every day, another 30,000 people fall into crisis levels of food insecurity.

An unrecognisable country
“Sudan is a country on the brink of collapse. The needs of the people are huge and growing by the day, more and more families are driven into poverty and forced from their homes,” Elsadig Elnour, Islamic Relief’s Country Director in Sudan says.

“Everyone has lost everything. Everyone is traumatised. That’s how it feels to be Sudanese at this moment.”

“We have lost loved ones, property, jobs, and the futures that we planned.”

At least 15,000 people have been killed so far in Sudan, although the real death toll is thought to be far higher as some areas remain extremely challenging to access.

A lifeline

As the fighting spread across the country, Islamic Relief has moved our main office several times to allow us to continue operating and supporting people in need in Sudan.

Many of our staff have become displaced and are experiencing the same challenges as the communities we serve. And yet, they continue to work hard to reach the most vulnerable, distributing food, water, cash and temporary shelter, as well as other support, to communities across the country.

“Despite the huge challenges, Islamic Relief is making a difference. We have reached more than 600,000 people delivering food, hygiene kits, health services, medicine and so much more,” Elsadig says.
